South Dakota location shoot

They were shooting a few scenes in South Dakota for National Treasure: Book of Secrets and decided to ship out a couple of sculptors in case they needed us.
They came up with a near impossible mission to sculpt a 6 foot long prop (no details, sorry) in a very short time. We were told what they needed on Wednesday and it was for a scene shooting on Friday. We worked 18 hours on Wednesday and 15 hours on Thursday, turned it over to plaster and paint and it was filmed Friday afternoon.
We were exhausted, but everyone involved was very happy with the final product. Got to go to Mt Rushmore to help with the install and check out the very impressive mountain of Presidents.
Flew back Saturday and I'm glad to be home.

Crazy and I

Another pic from S. Dakota at Crazy Horse Mountain.
Clean air and friendly locals made the trip less stressful.

GROO

Before heading out to location, Akiko and I had to crank out our submissions to the San Diego Comic Con souvenir book. She chose the 25th anniversary of the Rocketeer and I drew something for 25 years of Sergio Aragones' Groo.
Can't remember the last time I did a complete illustration from concept to finish in one day, but I burned most of my one day off to do it. Hope you enjoy.

Location Again

Thought my jet setting days were over, but here I go again.
I'm now flying out to South Dakota for a week or 2 in case they need a couple of sculptors for a location shot. Won't know what it will be till we get there.
Look for more info once I get back.

Visit from the Doctor

Doctor Vince, a member of the CAPA Alpha fanzine group, was visiting LA for business and stopped by to meet us in person. A fellow artist, Vince had his trusty Moleskin sketchbook and we had ours so we ate dinner at our favorite Thai restaurant, Saladong Song and did a few drawings.
Good food, sketches and conversation.

Chop Chop

Can't say what the set is that we're building for National Treasure 2, but I will say that it involves a Set Sculptor's bread and butter... ROCKS.
After 9 consecutive days blocking up Styrofoam, defining masses, shaping and carving rocks for 11 hours a day, I got a few days off for Easter. I will however be working on Easter Sunday instead of eating ham.
The rock sculpting has mainly been chopping foam with customized gardening tools.

Earthquake!

Was awoke this morning at 4:27 am (10 minutes before my work alarm goes off) by a 3.4 earthquake right here in our Pasadena area. Just a minor bump and roll, but definitely a startle.

24

For all you 24 fans out there, this is an "in process" photo of the remote controlled drone plane that was carrying a nuclear bomb during the show a few weeks ago. Thank Jack Bauer for saving the day again when he crash landed it.
Another sculptor and I carved the body, the staff shop made a mold and several fiberglass copies and special effects tricked it out with wheels and such.
