Art!

This weekend Akiko and I saw 2 great art exhibitions.
First up in Fullerton was the work of J.C. Leyendecker.

This guy was truly awesome. Crisp lines, realistic yet very stylized, Leyendecker established the look of commercial illustration between 1900 through the 40's.

Next we drove South to Santa Ana to see The Original Art of Basil Wolverton. Basil was know for his ink illustrations of wacky and bizarre characters that he did for comic books like Mad Magazine and Plop.

It was a treat to get an up close look at his pen and ink work. Wolverton's use of lines and textures to create grey values was a big influence on my own style. He had such an imagination too. Big thumbs up for both shows.
