New Sculpting Job

Didn't want to jinx it by writing something too soon, but can now spill the beans.
Tomorrow I start work on Land Of The Lost. It's a feature film based on the 70's TV show and will be starring Will Ferrell.
Can't wait to see who will be playing Chaka.

Upstate!

Akiko and I headed back East for the Holiday, landed in Rochester and then drove over to the Catskills to meet Nazuki, Steve and baby Matthew in Woodstock, NY.

As you can see, they are still playing up the whole "Hippie" thing there.

We got see gorgeous fall colors and it's now official... I don't miss 30 degree weather one single bit.

Matthew is now 1 year and 9 months old and as cute as ever.

Steve took us to an awesome spot called Platteclove/Seven Falls for some hiking.

We then hit Stockbridge, Mass to take in the the Norman Rockwell Museum and have dinner with Akiko's college buddy, Cathy.
On our way back to Roch we stopped at few places along the Hudson river.

Akiko at Clemont.

An amazing view from painter Frederick Church's compound at Olana.

Spent a night of good food and conversation with High School pal Brian Brundage and his family in Auburn, NY where they have a sweet house on lake Owasco.

Then it was back to Roch with family for Thanksgiving where Super Cute Toddler, Taryn, definitely knew how to charm the crowd.

Also want to send out a huge Thank You to all our buds that came out on a wet night to meet up with us at The Otter Lodge to tip a few beers. You guys and gals rock!

Turn Up The Base!

OK, after molding, casting and trimming the figure I sculpted, it was time to pull out the old urethane foam and sculpt a base.

Finished the rock carving, made a quick dump mold and added weight by dumping in lead shot while casting the base in urethane resin. Here he is painted with primer and done for now.

Colin got a some more motion out of the sculpt by stacking 2 bases.

Happy Thanksgiving and looking forward to seeing family and friends back in Upstate NY next week..

CONTROL

This weekend Akiko and I checked out Anton Corbijn's film Control.
It follows the short life of Ian Curtis, the lead singer of Joy Division. Shot in black and white with plenty of contrast, practically every shot is a beautiful composition with an artful eye for aesthetics.
Very well acted, gorgeous to look at, depressing story and an absolute must for Joy Division fans. If you know the history of Ian and the band, you'll be prepared for something other than a "feel good" ending so I wouldn't recommend Control to everyone, but it gets a big thumbs up from me.

Art!

This weekend Akiko and I saw 2 great art exhibitions.
First up in Fullerton was the work of J.C. Leyendecker.

This guy was truly awesome. Crisp lines, realistic yet very stylized, Leyendecker established the look of commercial illustration between 1900 through the 40's.

Next we drove South to Santa Ana to see The Original Art of Basil Wolverton. Basil was know for his ink illustrations of wacky and bizarre characters that he did for comic books like Mad Magazine and Plop.

It was a treat to get an up close look at his pen and ink work. Wolverton's use of lines and textures to create grey values was a big influence on my own style. He had such an imagination too. Big thumbs up for both shows.
